FAQs

  • Do I have to be an IR major to submit?

    • No, students from any major are welcome to submit papers that they believe are relevant to global affairs.

  • My paper was written while I was on a UBC exchange and submitted to my host university. Can I still submit it?

    • Yes, we are happy to accept papers written while on a UBC exchange semester.

  • Is it okay if the paper was submitted to a non-IR (GEOG, SPPH, ASIA… etc.) course?

    • Yes, the JIA is an interdisciplinary journal and regularly publishes from the wide variety of departments at UBC that deal with global issues.

  • I haven’t received the grade for this paper yet. Can I still submit it?

    • If your paper is not marked by the deadline, please note that in the comments of the submission form. We may reach out for further information after receiving your submission.

  • I wrote a paper that was non-assessed, but it was for UBC (eg. a research grant, award, experiential learning project etc.). Can I still submit it?

    • Yes, please note that in the comments of the submission form. We may reach out for further information after receiving your submission.

  • I graduated. Am I still eligible to submit?

    • UBC alumni of less than two years are eligible to submit articles, provided that they were written during their time as a UBC student. Articles written post-graduation cannot be considered, as the JIA publishes undergraduate work.

  • When should I expect to hear back?

    • Due to the volume of submissions, the JIA is not able to respond to all submissions. We are grateful to be able to review your work and understand it may be disappointing to not receive a response. If you have a specific follow-up on your submission, don’t hesitate to reach out via email. Authors who have submissions selected to move on can expect to hear from the JIA in March.

  • What happens to my paper once I submit it?

    • The JIA Editors-in-Chief anonymize your paper. We assign it to a team of JIA editors, who read it and score it on the JIA rubric, deciding if it should pass to the next round of edits. This process is repeated until we arrive at a shortlist of papers. At this point, we begin the faculty-review process, and editors begin working directly with you, the author, to polish the paper for publication.

  • I’m not sure if this paper is good/original/polished etc. enough to submit.

    • If you’re considering submitting, and your paper meets the essential criteria, please don’t hesitate to submit it. We publish a great diversity of subject matter, from students of all experience levels and backgrounds. We work directly with you to refine your paper, substantively and stylistically, helping you do everything from incorporating new evidence to changing the citation method. If you need inspiration, don’t hesitate to review previous editions for an idea of the subject matter and quality of submissions. Please reach out to the Editors-in-Chief via email if you have any questions or concerns.

The 2023/24 JIA Editors look forward to receiving your submissions.
